The pandemic has disproportionately impacted low-income communities, and many low and no-income individuals never received the stimulus-related funds they were entitled to due to barriers such as low-banking access, the complex tax filing process and confusion around noncitizen spouses.
Several nonprofits came together as the Get My Payment IL Coalition to help ensure more hardworking, low-income Illinoisans could receive their stimulus checks. The challenge – the targeted audiences may not have bank access, may have not filed taxes in previous years, may have confusion regarding eligibility due to a noncitizen spouse or may have a general mistrust with the government or funds.
To break down the barriers, we developed a public relations campaign to help inform the community of the funds they are eligible for and connect individuals to resources to receive those funds. Our strategy centered on featuring the eligibility facts, communicating the potentially considerable upside of taking action, $3,700 to $30,000+ by filing 2020 taxes, trusted resources in the community and families that have benefited from the funds.
